Understanding the Treatment of Back Pain

Maintenance Care vs. Symptom-Guided Treatment

If you suffer from recurrent or persistent low back pain, you know how disruptive it can be. While exercise and education are proven ways to prevent new episodes or lessen their impact, osteopaths often recommend a strategy called Maintenance Care. This approach aims to keep low back pain at bay before it becomes a problem again. A recent study explored whether  Maintenance Care is more effective than only treating symptoms when they arise
Study Method

In this study, 328 patients aged 18-65 with non-specific low back pain who initially responded well to osteopathic/chiropractic care were selected. They were split into two groups: one received Maintenance Care, while the other group received treatment based only on their symptoms. The effectiveness was measured by tracking the number of days each patient experienced bothersome low back pain over a year, using weekly text message check-in

Results

The findings were compelling. The group receiving Maintenance Care had significantly fewer days with bothersome low back pain (about 13 days less over the course of a year) compared to those in the symptom-guided group. However, the Maintenance Care group did require more frequent treatments.

Conclusion

So, what does this mean for those with recurrent or persistent low back pain? Maintenance Care appears to be a more effective strategy to reduce the number of painful days. For those who respond well to initial osteopathic or chiropractic treatments, Maintenance Care can be a valuable option to keep low back pain from returning or worsening.
