Neck Pain After the Salon? Here’s What Your Spine Is Telling You

When leaving the salon, we all expect to feel better, but what we often experience instead is a stiff neck, headaches, and soreness. The cause of this can vary from the chair we sit in to how long we remain seated, but the main contributor is often the shampoo bowl. The position used during hair washing places significant strain on the neck and upper body, especially for those with pre-existing tension and postural issues.

When positioned at the salon bowl, the neck is often placed into hyperextension for a sustained period of time as the head rests on the edge of the basin. This position, combined with the pressure from the bowl, compresses the cervical spine whilst adding tension to the muscles at the base of the skull, shoulders, and upper back.

Most commonly, people experience neck pain, tension headaches, and shoulder stiffness. Occasionally, some suffer from dizziness, jaw tightness, and even fainting. In extremely rare instances, people can experience something called “Beauty Parlor Stroke Syndrome,” in which blood flow through the cervical arteries becomes compromised. Although highly uncommon, it highlights the importance of maintaining postural health when getting your hair done.

Hairdressers themselves are also at risk. Research consistently shows high levels of musculoskeletal pain among salon professionals due to repetitive movements, awkward postures, prolonged standing, and repeated reaching around shampoo bowls.

The good news is that you can make small adjustments to support and protect your spine. Using a seat wedge, a folded towel for neck support, adjusting chair height, limiting prolonged extension, and maintaining better everyday posture can all help reduce strain.

Postural health is not just about how we stand; it is about how our bodies cope with repeated positions over time. When we restore the natural curves of the spine, we restore resilience within the body.
